Government's Commitment on Immigration

In response to the Prime Minister's interview on Radio 4's Today programme this morning, Frank Field and Nicholas Soames said:

"The Prime Minister's tough statement on the Coalition Government's commitment to bring net immigration down to the tens of thousands is excellent news. If this is to be achieved, whilst retaining the flexibility that our economy needs, we must ensure that economic migration no longer confers an almost automatic right to settle here. We need to import some skills, but we should also be training our own workforce."  [More]

According to Government figures, immigration at current levels will add about 7 million to the population of England by 2031 - equivalent to 7 cities the size of Birmingham.
