In a New Year message issued today, the co-chairmen of the Cross Party Group on Balanced Migration, Frank Field MP and Nicholas Soames MP, said:

“The public will be pleased that they can at last see results from the government’s immigration policies. A 25% fall in net migration in the year to last March is an encouraging start but there is a very long way to go. Provided that the government remain resolute, we expect the numbers to fall considerably further. Indeed, they have a fighting chance of getting to their objective of tens of thousands by 2015.”
“Everyone agrees that there are some migrants with vital skills who are needed for our economic recovery but this is no excuse for mass immigration. The key will be to get the procedures simplified and settled down so as to minimise delays and bureaucracy. And the more that common sense can be applied, the happier everyone will be.”
