Update 2: Immigration: Ten Key Facts

Immigration: Ten Key Facts

1. England is already the most crowded country in Europe (excluding Malta).

2. The UK population is officially forecast to increase from the present 61 million to 70 million in 2028 and 85 million in 2081.

3. 70 per cent of that increase - nearly seven million people - will be due to immigration. That is equivalent to seven cities the size of Birmingham.

4. To stay below 70 million, net migration - all those who come here, minus those who leave - must be reduced from 237,000 (2007) to 50,000 a year and held there. Government measures announced so far would achieve a 5% reduction compared to the 75% reduction needed.

5. If immigration continues at the current level, it will account for nearly 40% of future household formation. One home will have to be built every six minutes to house new migrants and their families.

6. In 2007 502,000 migrants arrived in the UK – almost one every minute.

7. Net migration has more than quadrupled since 1997.

8. Today, nearly one in four children are born to a foreign born mother.

9. Since 1997 employment of foreign born workers aged 16 and over has nearly doubled from 1.9 million to 3.8 million. Of these just over two thirds (2.6 million) came from outside the EU.

10. In 2008 employment of UK born workers fell by 278,000 while non-UK born employment rose by 214,000 to 3.8 million.
